Andrew Beckett, played by Tom Hanks, is a successful lawyer working at a prominent law firm located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is discriminated against and fired by the partners in his law firm when they discover he has AIDS. He then sues the law firm for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Rather than evaluating his abilities and past successes as a lawyer, the law firm decided they would not employ someone who has AIDS.
People who have the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome are protected against discrimination by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Someone who is capable of performing all of the duties of his or her job cannot be fired solely because he or she has AIDS. "Philadelphia" is a very moving film that shows how people who have AIDS must fight against unfair, inaccurate and biased discrimination.
